About Matt Dean Drum Lessons

Matt has made drumming his way of life since being a student and studying how to hit bits of old cow skin with bits of wood. He now spends his days convincing himself and others that it is more technical than that description above suggests and that it is a worthy pastime for others to enjoy.

There are three main areas to Matt’s professional life and they are:

Drummer

Matt has been a professional drummer since gaining a 1st class BA (Hons) music degree in 2001. He has performed live and studio with artists in practically every style and this experience is why he is in demand for live and studio performances.

He has recorded for many record labels, artists and producers and had his playing featured on TV around the world.

He also runs a custom designed drum studio where he records for artists, producers and TV producers around the world. This can be found at onlinesessiondrum.

Author

Matt has had features published in many big drum magazines internationally including Modern Drummer (USA), Rhythm (UK) and Drumscene (AUS). He also has books published covering topics such as the history of the drum and how to become a professional drummer.

Educator

Matt has taught drumming to hundreds of students ranging from 1-2-1 lessons, drum clinics and online content. He has a 1st Class BA (Hons) in music and an enhanced DBS certificate. Visit Total Drummer to view online drumming course.

His teaching ethos is based around finding each individual’s passion. If you focus on the things that they are passionate about, you can learn all the necessary technique, theory and drumming vocabulary. The worst thing a teacher can do is force a student down a path that switches off the flame. So Matt will find the flame and use that to develop a drummer. This includes grade exams for some students, learning Green Day songs for another, developing Latin rhythms for the next and something different again for another. Each student is an individual.

However, from years of teaching experience Matt has a huge library of teaching content and tried and tested syllabi. The studio is well equipped with electronic and acoustic drums, keyboards, world percussion, recording facilities and more so it’s a great creative space in which to learn.
