Cost of Drum Lessons
What is the cost of drum lessons and how much should you really pay for drum lessons in Surrey?
Good questions and this is clearly an important part of your decision when looking for drum lessons. How much are drum lessons and what do you actually get for that?
Like many things in life you get what you pay for but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should go for the most expensive drum teacher. It really depends on what you need.
For example, when I was doing a music degree my teacher was encouraging me to teach drums and I asked how much I should charge. They suggested a rate which wasn’t far behind their rate. I challenged that reasoning that they should charge way more than me with all their experience and skills.
But they pointed out that I am nearly as qualified as they are to teach a beginner. I had the performance and technical skills to teach people to a fairly high level. Therefore it was justified to charge a fair rate to provide that service.
Therefore a younger drummer at a cheaper rate might be the right choice
What they might lack is the experience of knowing how to communicate the message effectively with each individual and how to build the rapport to cultivate a really productive student/teacher relationship. But if you have a new or young drum teacher near you then it might be worth giving them a go.
Facilities
The other aspect is that a younger drum teacher might not have access to great facilities. This might not be a problem. They might travel to your house and therefore their own facilities are irrelevant.
I am very fortunate to have built up a great custom designed drum studio. I record for artists all around the world from here and my students get access to the space and all the equipment in it as well. I teach elsewhere (in schools for example) but nowhere allows me to offer as good a service as my own studio with all the resources I have at my fingertips.
You can see the studio in action at my online teaching website Total Drummer. If you want 1-2-1 drum lessons then you can come to the same studio and make use of these facilities and my wealth of drum teaching and performing experience.
Teaching Style
The teaching style of a drum teacher is a very important aspect. If the teacher resonates with the student then learning is easy and fun. Some teachers are very serious, some are jovial and create a fun environment. What works for you and your personality type might be different to that of the next person so this can be quite an individual thing.
The best thing you can do is book an initial lesson and just see if it works for you. Most teachers don’t force any long term commitment so you can book one lesson and have fun for half an hour, or an hour, and then decide if you want another lesson afterwards.
To help you make that decision many teachers have online teaching content so you can get a feel for how they work before you contact them. Below you will find a video of me teaching a beginner drum beat.
